Most swimmers have a faster backstroke dolphin kick than butterfly. Maggie MacNeil's best stroke is butterfly however her dolphin kick is so fast that she is the 50 Short Course Meters Backstroke world record holder. The question is what makes Maggie's backstroke dolphin kick so fast? In this video we analyze Maggie's dolphin kick using our Velocity Meter technology and compare with Olympian Mikita Tsmyh. Coach Gary Hall Sr explores the scientific explanation why dolphin kick on your back is typically faster than your stomach.

How is the weather in Palestine*
As a kid in the 80s, Disney's Little Mermaid had just come out, and all my friends and I spent all summer at a friend's pool trying to swim like Ariel! This lady has mastered the mermaid swim! It's also amazing to me, as someone who hasn't been in the swimming world since the early 2000s, how much we are able to learn through underwater video. Back when I was swimming laps for fitness, I remember ordering books on swimming technique from early-days Amazon. If I was lucky, there would be a diagram or illustration. Most of the time, I was trying to envision what the text was describing, and then trying to remember that during my next swim to try to integrate it into my technique. I can learn so much more from a few minutes of video than I could from hours of reading. It's really amazing to me how far swimming has come!
I observe that you are not exhaling underwater Please clarify that water does not shoots in your nose giving a sharp pain If not then i how you have managed it & give some practice tips & tricks for me as well cause while flip turn & underwater backstroke i need to exhale to prevent any entry of water Plz do reply in detail!!!! Tysm
thank you sir. just yesterday my 8 year old son had his swim meet and won 50 breast stroke trial but in 50 fly despite of having a clear lead he finished second towards the end. post race we sat near to a smaller pool near by and discussed the same with him that why his arms were delayed under water and asked him to use this same technique and he felt easy on his arms. sir correct me if im wrong in free and fly I suppose both have almost similar arm cycle , only diff is in fly we use both hands at the same time which is not the case in free, so your explanation would also be applicable in fly pull, isnt it??? last but not the least thank you again for this explanantion , now I am going to show this to my son. and he calls you gary sir by the way :) would appreceiate your reply.
Yes, you are correct. The mechanics of the fly pull and free pull are very similar. Few differences...but nothing major. Hope your son improves. Please bring him to a Race Club camp. Gary
@@theraceclub thanks for your kind reply. Sir we live in Mumbai, India. I am really not sure how can I put him under your guidance. :) kindly assist.
А где этот самый flip turns?
New measurement learnt 😅
Great 👍
Is this yards or meters?. Is he doing a straight arm pull, or with a slight bent? For sprint should you pull a little wider that your shoulder width or narrower?
Yards, bent arm pull, hand just inside the elbow and deeper than in distance free races.
Interesting. Most other videos on high elbow catch say the main reason is for power and engagement of the core. This video provides much needed info.
Yes, high elbow pull generates less propulsion with less drag.
Bruh he did the pull out for more than half the lane while I can only go like a inch
Yea, he's pretty amazing.
Kicking fast is not easy.
great one
Thanks.

Interesting video. I will start working on my ankle flexibility. Now I understand better why it is so important. Awesome!!
Glad it was helpful!

Que bueno! Tenemos mas que 400 videos de alta calidad. Gary
On the recovery I can’t seem to get my arms to come out straight out of the water. I tried straightening them out, but is there something else I could be doing that’s causing that? Thank you!
Virtually all elite butterflyers use a straight arm recovery, because there is more kinetic energy in the arm entry and better coupling with the second down kick. Try using the left/right/front drill to learn how to recover with the straight arms. You can find that instructional video on our website as a Lane 3 member. www.theraceclub.com.
06:39 that is past vertical sir!
As long as his upper arm is behind the ear, it is considered legal.
My favorite drill is 2kick-1pull.
We use that drill for several technical improvements. Gary
Good luck Kasia 💣💥
Is that Kasia Wasick kr Brad Tandy?
Thanks for this great information. It's interesting and very useful. The variable that would be difficult to account for is how to maintain the optimal Dolphin Kick Technique while being full relaxed, tension free and use as little energy as possible. If the best technique dictated by the data requires a movement that requires a level of muscled tension beyond relaxed flexibility it will use too much energy resulting in an energy deficit experienced after surfacing. This energy deficit will result in an overall slower time even if the underwater is faster. I suppose the objective would then be to gain the flexibility and technique required over time until it can be done in a fully relaxed state. Pretty much the same as optimizing any change in swimming technique. The difficulty might be that some people simply do not have the ankle flexibility. Genetics plays it's hand. Relaxed flexibility is Key.
Thanks f infonya
You are welcome!
can someone explain what he means by two up one down vs. one up one down? thanks, ethan
One breath on a stroke, no breath on a stroke is one up one down, two up means two breaths in a row, then hold one. Gary
@@theraceclub thanks, Gary. and "hold one" means no breath on that stroke? Ethan
now i get it. i would just describe it as breath every stroke, breath every two strokes, or breath every three strokes.
When you instruct swimmers in this drill, what is the main point of emphasis that you like to focus on in terms of how this drill relates to swimming butterfly? Is the emphasis on reducing the delay before initiating the pull? Or something different?
We like to use this L/R/FRONT drill for several different techniques: 1. Getting a low-profile breath with full extension of the neck 2. Vertical or ascending arm recovery (depending on shoulder flexibility) 3. Correct hand entry and pulling motion and 4. Tucking the chin down (but not the chest too much). Gary
Either you know it or you don’t. Only competition will define it
Yes...but there are stretches for the hip and ankle that can definitely improve kick propulsion. Gary
Is there a tipping point between streamlining and power when, swimming without the finis strap, the knees are too close together? Or is it always preferable in theory to keep the knees as narrow as possible?
I used to think the narrower, the better. If swimmers don't have good internal rotation flexibility of the hip nor good pronation of the ankle, they have to go wider with the knees to get any meaningful propulsion. Let the knees go where they need to to get propulsion. Gary
Excelente 💯
Gracias! Muy agradecido!
Why flutter kick and not dolphin kick tho?
The flutter kick enables the swimmer to increase the stroke rate better. Also good as coupling drill for strong arm and head entry. Gary
sir what exercise should I practise to gain that type of shoulder flexibility and rotation during the start?
Do do a full arm swing on the start, you need to have good extension flexibility of the shoulder....but not great. You can find many shoulder flexibility exercises on our website at www.theraceclub.com...lane 2 or lane 3 membership. Gary
Excelente demostración lo hace tan fácil
De acuerdo! Pero tiene piernas muy fuertes!
i’m very bad at that i neeed help to get there can you explain to me the shortest way to get there im very impressed 😊too
Starts with great ankle plantar flexibility...then build leg strength and stamina for the dolphin kick motion. Takes years to develop. Gary
Congratulations!!!
Thank you!!
Lovely dolphin kicks❤❤
We agree!!
Power! Good luck Maggie! Nice work Gary.
Thank you!
Those legs are super strong, may you share her dryland tryning?
They are strong! Built over many years. Lots of dryland and kicking. We have not done her dryland program.
@theraceclub Thanks guys, Yes I understand that swimming is a way of living, and through the years, we may achieve stronger bodies 💪
Butterfly style is always awesome but difficult/hard to learn.
It really is!
lot of air bubbles around the hands and arms, MP had almost nothing.
Air bubbles will reduce propulsion on the hand, but nearly every swimmer has some. Great swimmers, like Phelps, have few.
Is high elbow , high shoulder , long swimming favourable ?? Or this is better???please advise
In longer events over 200 meters, we recommend lower octane recovery (bent elbow) but vertical with a high elbow pulling motion to reduce frontal drag. Gary
right arm entry is not as good as his left. He's holding his whole arm above his body on the recovery. His right palm almost looks dorsiflexed.
We don't look for extension of the wrists so long as the hand is above the water when fully extended. Usually the wrist is straight at this point. Gary
Agree there is a weird wrist flick thing going on with the right hand just before entry. The bottom of his palm seems to be hitting the water before his fingers at times. Lots of good things happening though. Still beautiful to watch

What is a high elbow catch in backstroke???
It is not really a high elbow...but a bent elbow, with the swimmer trying to maintain the elbow pointing in the direction he/she is moving during the early pull phase. The hand should be above the elbow, not below it.
@@theraceclub tyq❤️❤️
Do you mean when we are pulling were elbow and forearm comes in one line the elbow should be slightly behind???
Cuando entra en el agua la mano, el antebrazo debe ir cerrando por el codo doblado más alto que la mano que empuja hasta la cadera , no debe ir el antebrazo recto como un molinillo. Espero haber ayudado. 💙🏊♀️ @@IP12500
👍👏👏
Thank you!! Getting the right pull in backstroke is challenging!
Hey. Great video. What technique would you suggest for marathon and beyond distance swim ? Talking about 10k+ (pool and open water).
Hi Luke. It is kind of like the 1500 m where you see all three types of freestyle being used. Depends a lot on the kick speed and height of the swimmer. It is very hard to sustain a higher stroke rate for that distance....but some do (86-90 SR). If the kick is stronger and the swimmer is taller, usually a hip driven technique will work best.
Truly amazing!
Agreed!
I actually prefer not to use my arms and just use my legs so they work harder .
That is why most good backstrokers stay underwater and dolphin kick for 15 meters. They are faster and expend less energy than swimming. Down side is they don't get to breathe.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
@@theraceclub can you suggest some drills to increase power in dolphin kicks
